Upon looking at a customer's trailer for a Mobile Caravan Roadworthy Certificate and Gas Certificate I found some bearing issues
Here is something I don’t talk about a lot is BEARING TENSION
I see a lot of caravans and camper trailers fail a caravan roadworthy certificate due to, to much play in the bearings.
I have seen dust seals squished between the inner bearing and the machined lip on the stub axle giving a false bearing tention reading to the trades person assembling the components after a service
There are many aspects to doing the job properly but it all comes down to experience and the old “you pay for what you get”
Most people don’t realise you have to seat the bearing upon assembly then back the castle nut off then setting the bearing tension to just be finger tight.
Sometimes the perfect setting can’t be achieved as there is only 1 hole to locate a split pin.
In that case if you’re getting your caravan serviced with me, I’ll be drilling out a second hole in the stub axle to set the bearing tension to be pretty much perfect
